Disarmament and security are the main foreign policy slogans of 1934. However, a global rearmament is being practiced, with the National Socialist German Reich at the centre of the discussion. In Germany, the regime under Hitler has further consolidated its power and bloodily liquidated the inner-party opposition around SA Chief of Staff Röhm. All areas of cultural and social life are subject to the so-called "coordination" and thus to National Socialist control. Artists are driven out of the German Reich through performance bans and massive pressure. The conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler causes a stir when he speaks out in an open letter for the hostile composer Paul Hindemith. Even sport is overshadowed by politics - the 1934 Football World Cup in Italy becomes a propaganda show for the fascist regime.
