In the middle of the Second World War, the United Nations was founded, the "White Rose" was formed in Munich and Bing Crosby recorded the global hit "White Christmas". Events that moved people in peacetime, such as the fire of the largest ship in the world, the "Normandie" in New York Harbor or the major fire in a Boston nightclub in which almost 500 people died, paled in comparison to the far more gruesome reality of war that had become part of everyday life. The failure of the "blitzkrieg strategy" advocated by Führer and Chancellor Adolf Hitler against the USSR was already evident at the beginning of 1942. When the Red Army succeeded in encircling the German 6th Army in Stalingrad in November 1942, the turning point in the Russian campaign was reached.
