Chronicle Volume 1938

For the democracies, 1938 was a year of defeats - even if the looming world war could still be prevented. It was not only in Europe that the aggressiveness of the authoritarian regimes became more and more obvious; the democratic states were only able to maintain peace with appeasement and concessions with great difficulty.
Führer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, in power for five years, celebrated two foreign policy triumphs in 1938: in March he was able to incorporate Austria into the German Reich, and in the Munich Agreement in September France and Great Britain accepted the invasion of Reich German troops into the Sudeten German areas of Czechoslovakia.
