Chronicle Volume 1945

In 1945 the Second World War ends with the unconditional surrender. The result is horrific. Over 50 million people have died since 1939. Almost the entire European continent lies in ruins. With the exception of cities in neutral countries and Great Britain, almost all of Europe's major cities are destroyed. The trials of the Nazi leaders begin in Nuremberg. Fighting continues on the Asian continent until September. The war takes on a new dimension when American atomic bombs destroy the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The United Nations is founded to secure the fragile world peace. In a time of need, culture takes on a special significance.
