Looking back, the revolution in Cuba is the most outstanding foreign policy event of 1959. However, since the seizure of power did not take place under communist auspices and the USA initially viewed Castro and the revolution with sympathy, the global political dimensions of this change of power were not yet clear. Cultural events were determined by clinging to what was tried and tested. In theaters and operas, the classical repertoire predominated, while German films offered only plain, home-style fare in contrast to the 'Nouvelle Vague'. The sporting event of 1959 was Marika Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler, who won the hearts of the public with their victory at the European Pair Skating Championships in Davos, Switzerland.
The chronicle shows these events, but it also shows how people lived back then and brings history to life. This makes the 1959 chronicle a unique gift.
