Chronicle Volume 1964

"We are somebody again" - with this phrase, Chancellor Ludwig Erhard, the father of the economic upturn, summed up the Germans' increased self-confidence in 1964. The major powers may be promoting peaceful coexistence, but the Federal Republic of Germany is not prepared to subordinate the German question to the policy of détente. It insists on its "sole claim to representation" and refuses to recognize the GDR. The "Beatles", the "Rolling Stones" and other bands use their new pop music to trigger a mass movement among young people who want to free themselves from social constraints and seek new ideals in life.
