Chronicle Volume 1977

The political terror of the so-called Red Army Faction (RAF), which has been raging in the Federal Republic of Germany since the beginning of the 1970s, escalated in the 'German Autumn' with the kidnapping and murder of the employers' president Hanns Martin Schleyer and the hijacking of a fully occupied Lufthansa plane to Mogadishu.

In 1977, the debate about the peaceful use of nuclear energy reached broad sections of the population. Young people in particular expressed their opposition to nuclear energy in demonstrations.

The newly founded 'Charter 77' demands respect for human and civil rights in Czechoslovakia.

Developments in the Middle East give cause for hope. The Egyptian president surprisingly declared his willingness to negotiate peace with long-time enemy Israel.

The sporting highlights of the year include Dietrich Thurau's successful performance in the Tour de France, the GDR athlete Rosemarie Ackermann, who was the first woman to jump over a height of 2 m, and the success of the Swede Björn Borg at the Wimbledon anniversary tennis tournament.
