PT Barnum's career began with George Washington's alleged 161-year-old wet nurse and various curiosities, such as the "Fiji Mermaid" - actually a monkey body with a fish tail - or the fake remains of a petrified man presented as the "Cardiff Giant". His circus became famous in 1882 with the almost 3.5-meter-tall elephant "Jumbo". This 50-state program ticket is adorned with a portrait of the circus pioneer, Jumbo, the skyline of Hartford, the famous "Charter Oak", Connecticut's map and motto "OUI TRANSTULIT SUSTINET" (Latin for "He who brought over, endures") and the year of admission to the union.
