John Bassett Moore was the first American judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice in The Hague from 1922 to 1928. Before that, he taught as a professor and worked in the US State Department. He was born and admitted to the bar in Delaware. This note from the 50 US states program features a portrait of Moore, the Wilmington skyline, a map of Delaware, the Cape Henlopen lighthouse, the state motto "Liberty and Independence" and the year of admission to the union. Delaware was the first of the Thirteen Colonies to adopt the constitution in 1787 and is therefore also known as "The First State".
