Born in Georgia, Martin Luther King Jr. was the most well-known leader of the civil rights movement from 1955 onwards. Through his calls for non-violent protest and speeches such as the "I Have a Dream" speech, he called for an end to political racial segregation in the southern states. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This note from the 50 US states program is adorned with King's portrait, the skyline of Atlanta, a peanut plant (the state fruit), the state motto "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation" and the year of admission to the union. Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi and with industrialization it gained the nickname "Empire State of the South".
