In 1810, Kamehameha I was the first to conquer all of the Hawaiian islands and unite them in a kingdom. While many Pacific islands were colonized, Hawaii remained independent until the end of the 19th century. To maintain cohesion, Kamehameha standardized the legal system and promoted trade with the West. This note from the 50-US-States program features a portrait and statue of the king, Waikīkī Beach at the foot of the Diamond Head volcano in Honolulu, Hawaiian hibiscus flowers, the state motto "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono" (The life of the country is preserved by righteousness) and the year of admission to the union.
