Amelia Earhart was not only the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, she also wrote bestselling books and became an icon of female emancipation. In 1937, when she attempted to become the first woman to fly around the globe, her plane disappeared over the Pacific and she was declared dead two years later. The aviation pioneer was born in Kansas. This note from the 50 US states program is adorned with a portrait of Earhart, a depiction of her on the nose of her plane, the Monument Rocks south of Oakley, a drawing of the plane, the outline of a bison, Kansas' motto "Ad astra per aspera" (Latin for "on rough paths to the stars") and the year of admission to the union.
