In the War of 1812, the chief of the Choctaw people, Pushmataha, fought on the side of the United States Army and achieved the rank of brigadier general. Highly respected by both indigenous people and European settlers, he was also called the "Indian General". This note from the 50 U.S. States program features Pushmataha after a painting by the artist Charles Bird King from 1824, the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson, the seal of Mississippi, the state motto "Virtute et Armis" (Latin for "By valor and arms") and the year of admission to the union. Known for its state tree, the evergreen magnolia, Mississippi is also called the "Magnolia State".
