In 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first successful flight with a motorized and controlled airplane on the sand dunes south of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Flyer consisted of a fabric-covered wooden frame and had a gasoline engine. It took 59 seconds to cover the 852 feet (approx. 260 meters) distance. This note from the 50 U.S. states program is adorned with a portrait of the Wright brothers, the Raleigh skyline, depictions of the Wright Flyer, the state motto "Esse Quam Videri" (Latin for "To be more than to seem") and the year of admission to the union. As a historically important producer of tar, North Carolina is also called the "Tar Heel State."
