In 1836, General Sam Houston led the Texans to victory over Mexico, ending the Texas War of Independence. He subsequently became the first president of the Republic of Texas, which finally became a U.S. state in 1845. Texas' largest city is named after Sam Houston, among other places. The equestrian statue erected there and his portrait can be seen on this banknote from the 50 U.S. states program. He is also adorned with Houston's skyline, the winding tower of the Spindletop oil field, Texas' seal and motto "FRIENDSHIP," and the year of admission to the union. The star in the seal dates back to the time as a republic and gave Texas the name "Lone Star State."
