In 1837, Vermont-born blacksmith John Deere built a plow from a steel saw blade, creating the first self-cleaning steel plow in history. The device was instrumental in the settlement of the Great Plains and the foundation for what is now the largest agricultural machinery company in the world. This note from the 50 States Program features Deere, a lake in the Green Mountain National Forest, the statue of General John Stark in Bennington, sugar maple leaves, an outline of Vermont, the state motto "Freedom and Unity" and the year of admission to the Union. Vermont is composed of the French words "Vert" (green) and "Mount" (mountain).
