Booker Taliaferro Washington, a native of Virginia, was one of the last generation of African Americans born into slavery and a major leader in the civil rights movement. He became nationally known for his 1895 Atlanta Compromise speech, in which he emphasized the importance of educating blacks. This 50 States Program bill features his portrait, a tiger swallowtail butterfly, the statue of Neptune in Virginia Beach, the Richmond skyline, the ships of the first English settlers in America, the state motto "Sic semper tyrannis" (Latin for "So always to the tyrant") and the year of admission to the Union. Due to its history as the first English colony, Virginia is also called the "Old Dominion."
