Souvenir note 100 dollars West Virginia - The Mountain State

As a NASA employee, Katherine Johnson's calculations of flight paths played a key role in the success of the Mercury program and the Apollo 11 mission. She was from West Virginia and was also known as the "human computer" thanks to her enormous mathematical skills. This note from the 50 US states program is adorned with a portrait of Johnson, diagrams of her calculations, the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville, the lighthouse at Summersville Lake, the state motto "Montani Semper Liberi" (Latin for "mountain people are always free") and the year of admission to the union. West Virginia owes its nickname "Mountain State" to the Appalachian Mountains.
