Under the name "Buffalo Bill," the bison hunter William Frederick Cody became world-famous as a symbol of the Wild West. In Wyoming, he founded the town of Cody in 1895 and initiated irrigation projects that led to the construction of the Buffalo Bill Dam - the largest dam in the world at the time. This note from the 50 US states program features a portrait of Buffalo Bill, the Devils Tower rock, the silhouette of a bison, the state motto "Equal Rights" and the year of admission to the union. Like the motto, Wyoming's nickname "The Equality State" also refers to women's suffrage. It was introduced in 1869, earlier than in any other state.
