As a trumpet virtuoso, Louis Armstrong, born in New Orleans in 1901, literally invented the role of the soloist in jazz, which until then had been played as collective ensemble music. Through his innovative improvisation, he had an enormous influence on the genre and with his charismatic voice he was also very successful as a singer. This bill from the 50 US states program features Armstrong, the New Orleans skyline, a trumpet, sheet music, a treble clef, the state motto "Union, Justice, Confidence" and the year of admission to the union. Louisiana's nickname has its origins in the early settlers' fascination with the parental care of the local pelicans.
