The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is undoubtedly one of the most famous sculptures in the world. It was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886 as a gift from the French people to the United States. It depicts the Roman goddess of liberty, Libertas, holding a torch and the Declaration of Independence. This note from the 50 U.S. states program is adorned with the head and outline of the statue, the Manhattan skyline, New York's motto "EXCELSIOR" (Latin for "aim higher") and the year of its admission to the union. The capital, New York City, also known as the "Big Apple," is considered the financial center of the world.
